This AICC meeting was hosted by Boeing

CMI Working Group/Independent Test Lab – Bill McDonald, Boeing

Bill’s presentation summarized the projects/specifications that the CMI working group is responsible for. He then spent more time discussing the work on CSA (Content Service Architecture). His presentation included some use cases for CSA.

After use cases are determined, then we will boil down requirements. Then let the requirements drive a new spec.

Management and Processes Subcommittee Update – Bruce Perrin, Boeing

The topics covered by Bruce were:

Charter of the subcommittee

Origins and conduct of the survey

Survey results: 32 respondents. The presentation shows the results of each question on the survey.

Discussion: centered around an experiment Bruce conducted at Boeing to determine the effectiveness of using virtual environments in training.

Training Technology Subcommittee Update – Eloi Chabaud, Airbus

Eloi discussed how Airbus has enabled customers to play web courseware locally – from a CD ROM or an USB key. Several challenges were discussed, along with how each was met and overcome.

The object is to reuse existing HTML courses, have minimum installation and configuration problems and then run them with or without an LMS.

Communication Subcommittee Update: Google Apps, Website, & Social Networks – Tom King, Questionmark

Tom showed how podcasts can now be played online, and accessed from the AICC web site. He also showed the new AICC telephone number and fax number, and described how they work using RingCentral.

Tom also explained the RegOnline process and back-end for meeting registration. He requested feedback on the registration process. A few people were unable to pay by credit card. The consensus was that online registration was useful and should be used again. Tom proposed subsidizing the cost of registration ($4.25 per person regardless of fees paid), by offering advertising on the registration page. There was some discussion about this, but no conclusions.

AICC now uses Google Apps for Domains. There are up to 25 users accounts available for "@aicc.org" email & credentials to own/control Goggle Docs. Google Docs (word processing) was used for the Singapore meeting agenda.

Google spreadsheet forms are now used for the membership application, and the "download" license forms for the CMI Test Suite, Sample WBT, and PENS HTML. The license form updates and trigger notifications. Kris Rockwell has volunteered an admin assistant to monitor this and Tom's wife serves as a back-up. Together they reply to incoming notifications and respond with download information for the corresponding request. Jack Hyde is responsible for monitor and responding to membership applications.

Tom also talked about the AICC Linkedin and AICC Facebook groups. He pointed out that the AICC is now on twitter as AICC http://twitter.com/aicc [last 3 tweets also shown in AICC New Blog sidebar]. Kris Rockwell added that the AICC Emerging Technology Committee has a twitter account at http://twitter.com/aicc_etc

Tom concluded with a call for participation. Currently it is a committee of one, Tom. He has learned a lot doing this and so can you. There is a lot to do, and anyone can help by doing even a small part. You can volunteerfor a small task by sending email to Tom- Volunteer to assist with AICC communications.

Singapore Airlines LMS Implementation and Applications – Thian Wei Chan, Singapore Air

The presentation covers background information on the airline.

There are 9 different schools in the Singapore system. They are all implementing the Plateau LMS system. It caters to 30,000 staff. Mr Chan discussed some of the challenges of implementing the system.

Executive Committee report – Jack Hyde, AICC

Outstart will not be able to host our June meeting in Boston. The committee discussed the need to find a new host for June meeting.

Skillsoft, EEDO, NWA, FAA and Airbus were discussed as possible alternative hosts. The committee will try to get a new location and host as soon as possible, hopefully by the end of March.

It was decided to temporarily eliminate the Smart Graphics subcommittee and create an Emerging Technologies Subcommittee with Kris Rockwell as chairman. Smart Graphics will be restarted if a volunteer leader can be found for the subcommittee.

The Future of Learning Technology, SCORM, LETSI, & What Eduworks is Doing – Robby Robson, Eduworks

Robby’s presentation covered the following topics:

  • The Future: mobile, multiplayer, user generated, decentralized, virtual, social, and open sourced. Technology has changed significantly over the last 40 years.
  • Content is king: what is constant. What has not changed? Content.
  • SCORM and LETSI: Underlying assumptions covered. What problems were solved?
  • Where is SCORM going? ADL and LETSI are both working the problem from different approaches.
  • How do you future proof your training?
  • What is Eduworks Doing?

Hardware or Heartware? New Challenges in Maintenance Training for Internet-Generation Engineers and Technicians – Vincent Chang, SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC)

Vincent’s presentation centered around 4 questions.

  • Is training more hardware or heartware?
  • How has SIA/SIAEC evolved its training strategy over three decades?
  • How does the internet generation workforce learn? What will they want aircraft training to be like?
  • What suggestions can the industry give to AICC to shape the future of aircraft training using technology?

During the Q&A Bruce asked, “What do you think a game-based training program would look like?” Mr. Chang responded, “It should be scenario based, in such a way that the final objective is that they learn the right way to service an airplane.”

Online Rich-Media Training Development – Mark Nelson & Chris Jones, Framework Solutions

Mark and Chris talked about a program developed for a gold mining company to change the behavior of their drivers. The company was experiencing more deaths and injuries from driving accidents than any other aspect of the mining operation.

Attracting Them and Wowing Them – Innovative Thinking in Entry Level Aviation Training from New Zealand – Elizabeth Valentine, ATTTO

ATTTO is funded by the government and is a non-profit organization.

The presentation is about the complex role of this organization in New Zealand.

Offline CMI Update – Jack Hyde, AICC

Jack announced a new version (2.4) of the Offline CMI spec, and spent a little time on the background and what is new in the draft specification.

Questionmark Perception: Tools & Workflows for Effective Management of Assessments – Tom King, Questionmark

Tom’s presentation overviewed the Questionmark assessment management system. He then discussed workflows and a results management system (to analyze, edit and publish test results).

Tom recommended the AICC consider liaison with HR-XML.

Offline testing uses HTTP messaging to report student results. This might have some applicability to the offline CMI standard.

Stuttgart Presentation – Herbert Phillip Muller Sohn

Because of the availability of technical expertise in Stuttgart, Herbert suggested we could consider a theme for the meeting. With the expertise in the Stuttgart area guest speakers could make significant contributions in these areas.

What can be done with WEB 2.0

Potential of high speed computing

Simulation

The consensus of the attendees seemed to be to devote some time in Stuttgart to discussing the training implications of WEB 2.0.

An event with local university students was also suggested. Perhaps a panel of AICC members could discuss with the students opportunities for technical employment in the aviation and learning industries.

There was also the question if any members of the AICC would be interested in a tour of the Porsche factory or Mercedes museum. It was decided to survey the AICC membership (probably online) to see how much interest there is.

Herbert also said that his associate Ms. Maier would find us a hotel at approximately 100 Euros per night at a downtown Stuttgart location. Questions regarding the arrangements for Stuttgart can be addressed to either of the following.

Maier@fbd-bildungspark.de

mps@fbd-bildungspark.de

Serious Games – Kris Rockwell, Hybrid Learning Systems

Kris provided a provocative What are serious games?

  • What can they be used for?
  • Platforms for delivery
  • How can they be integrated/used?
  • Examples

Kris finished his presentation with the question what can the AICC do in this arena?

SC-36 Presentation and Discussion – Jack Hyde, AICC

Jack’s presentation discussed what happened at the last SC-36 meeting in November of last year. Specifically his report focused on what three working groups were doing:

WG 4: Content packaging and Metadata.

WG 3: Mobile computing.

WG 5: Quality
